Photo of the Day: Syrian Arab Red Crescent delivers aid to Homs

This past weekend, trucks from the Syrian Arab Red Crescent stocked with humanitarian aid entered the old city of Homs. While these trucks were clearly marked with the protective red crescent, shots were fired, targeting the aid workers. The team was able to exit Homs safely, although one of the truck drivers was injured.

Despite the attacks, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent distributed 250 food parcels, 190 hygiene kits, and medicines for people with chronic diseases in Homs. In addition, some 600 people were evacuated from the city. Meanwhile, Red Crescent and other humanitarian workers were able to access Barzeh, in the suburbs of Damascus and bring 47 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid.

The International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies issued a news release today expressing their deep concerns about the failure of parties involved in the Syrian conflict to respect the Red Cross Movement’s protective emblems.
