Photo blog: World Humanitarian Day

Today, August 19, marks World Humanitarian Day - a day to pay tribute to all of the humanitarian workers who have lost their lives doing their job. Today, the Red Cross commemorates all volunteers and staff, especially those in Syria, where more than 20 Syrian Arab Red Crescent workers have been lost since the beginning of the conflict.

More than 2.5 million people receive aid every month through the Syrian Arab Red Crescent but needs are increasing. Without the commitment of dedicated staff and volunteers, needs of the affected civilians of the Syrian conflict would not be met. On World Humanitarian Day, the Red Cross Red Crescent movement is calling on all concerned to respect the Geneva Conventions and the Red Cross Red Crescent’s mandate and emblems, and to guarantee the security and protection of humanitarian workers.
