Severe flooding is impacting several communities in Southern Alberta including the city of Calgary, prompting authorities to declare a state of local emergency and order evacuations. In addition to evacuations, power has been shut off for many residents and there are road closures throughout the region.
Canadian Red Cross staff and volunteers were immediately mobilized to assist in the response yesterday. The Red Cross is continuing to work closely with officials to ensure the basic needs of evacuees are being met. This means offering registration and inquiry services for evacuees and their family, providing cots, blankets and hygiene kits, and supporting shelters for evacuees. The Red Cross is also monitoring the situation in several other communities and is on stand-by.
How you can help
The Canadian Red Cross is accepting donations online, by phone at 1-800-418-1111 or in person at any Red Cross office or branch. Cash donations are the best way for Canadians to assist at this time.
