Haiti: Three years later

It has been three years since a devastating earthquake hit Haiti where the Red Cross continues to support communities. To date, the Red Cross has assisted more than 5 million earthquake survivors and more than 14,400 tons of aid from the Red Cross has arrived in Haiti.

It's hard to appreciate the sheer volume in aid the Red Cross has been able to provide so here are some comparisons to help you picture what all of your donations looks like:

Red Cross:

  • 5 million survivors = two times the population of Toronto, Ontario
  • 14,400 tons of aid = the weight of over 2,057 adult male elephants
  • 2.5 million litres of clean water provided = the average Canadian uses 329 litres per day which means that's enough water for 7,599 days or more than 20 years for one person!
  • 230,000 people have received emergency healthcare = the population of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
And thanks to the generous contributions from Canadians, the Canadian Red Cross:
  • 7,500 homes in Jacmel and Leogane built to sustain hurricane winds and flooding
  • 2,089 families being supported with cash grants for rent
  • More than 2,300 patients treated at Canadian Red Cross cholera treatment centres
  • 420,000 people reached through violence and abuse prevention efforts

The Canadian Red Cross is committed to continuing to support communities in Haiti and is investing in long-term and sustainable recovery operations. For more information, visit redcross.ca/Haiti
