Photo of the Day: Nobel Peace Prize recognition in Saskatoon

Brick recognizing the Red Cross Nobel Peace PrizeEarlier this week, Red Crossers gathered at the Peace Plaza at Rotary Park in Saskatoon for a ceremony to unveil a brick in recognition of the 1917 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the Red Cross. This brick was generously sponsored by SaskEnergy, a long time partner of Red Cross in the province.

The students helped with the presentation by acting out a story about how taking several small steps can achieve a big goal.

Did you know that the only Nobel Peace Prize awarded during World War I was in 1917 and was given to the International Committee of the Red Cross? Red Cross received this award for establishing a Prisoners of War Agency in 1914 whose primary objective was to supply information about the condition and location of prisoners to their families.

Peace Tower in SaskatoonI realize that most people aren’t as excited about history and international law as I am so I won’t go into more detail, however if you are interested in why the Red Cross received this award you can find out here. And the next time you visit the Peace Plaza, make sure to check out the brick dedicated to the Red Cross!
