The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.
SOUTH SUDAN: Over 375,000 people originating from South Sudan have crossed the border from the north since November 2010, many returning following the January 2011 referendum and the independence of the Republic of South Sudan on July 9, 2011. The influx reached a climax after the government of Sudan announced that citizenship for southerners living in the north would expire. South Sudan Red Cross volunteers are working around the clock in Kapuri Transit Camp, South Sudan, providing nutrition screens, distributing non food items and constructing tents.
SYRIA: The situation in many parts of Syria is very tense, with a daily toll of casualties, as fighting continues between government forces and armed opposition groups. The ICRC intends to help more than 1.5 million people, whether directly or indirectly affected by the fighting, through its recent appeal to donors. Since June 2011, the ICRC and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent have provided assistance to cover the needs of up to 400,000 people in Syria.
