Did you know that nearly every country in the world has produced Red Cross stamps at one time or another? It’s just one of the fascinating aspects of stamp collecting that’s allowed volunteer Cheryl Grantham to combine two passions: stamps and the Red Cross.
Cheryl has been volunteering at the Red Cross in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia since retiring from her teaching career in the mid-nineties. She hasn’t lost her love of education, but now she’s using her hobby to bring awareness about the rich history of the Red Cross and the movement’s founder Henry Dunant.
She was initially involved in stamp collecting as a teen but only took it up again more recently. She specifically started searching for Red Cross stamps in January. With the help of her friends from her local stamp collecting club, she's already collected hundreds of Red Cross stamps representing countries all over the world. She’s also taken to eBay and other websites to buy and trade stamps with other collectors, making friends along the way.
Her collection isn’t as extensive as that of Marc Dunant, one of the descendants of Henry Dunant, but she’s pleased with her finds so far.
Her goal is to display her Red Cross collection at a stamp show in Dartmouth in the fall. Let us know if you’re interested in sharing or trading Red Cross stamps with Cheryl.
