Every day, we publish a photo to show the Red Cross at work across the country or around the world. Do you have a photo to share? Let us know!
This picture dates back from the early 1920's, when the Red Cross in the British Empire started rolling out its "Outpost Hospital" program, serving small and remote communities that were unable to afford municipal hospitals. This Outpost Hospital in Bamfield on Vancouver Island is one of the few in Canada that are still in operation. It serves a community of 400 persons and is staffed by a registered nurse. The clinic is equipped to handle minor ailments and injuries: patients with severe medical ailments or injuries are evacuated by helicopter or float plane to larger medical centres. The Red Cross provides the clinic with an annual shipment of crutches, for those who get into trouble during their walk on the nearby West Coast Trail.
The Red Cross Outpost Hospital in Wilberforce, ON, is now a museum.
