The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.
HAITI: An independent evaluation into the IFRC beneficiary communications program in Haiti has shown just how critical information is to people in the aftermath of a disaster. Of the thousands of Haitians interviewed, 74 percent reported receiving information from the Red Cross. Of these, 96 percent said the information was useful, 83 percent reported taking action based on it and 73 percent shared the information with somebody else.
CAMBODIA: The Cambodian Red Cross is appealing to donors to support the emergency response as flood waters continue to ravage many provinces in the country. The Red Cross is working around the clock to evacuate people to higher ground, compile lists of evacuees and mobilize volunteers and disaster response teams. A total of 36,441 families have received relief aid to date.
TUVALU: Parts of the Pacific island state of Tuvalu are in danger of running out of fresh drinking water. The country is in its second week of drought-induced state of emergency. The Tuvalu Red Cross has been at the forefront of responding to the emergency. Volunteers have delivered tarpaulin packs, water containers and 10,000 litres of water to the communal water tank in Nukulaelae during the first joint assessment trip to the island.
The New Zealand Red Cross has also sent two emergency desalination units along with two relief delegates to support Tuvalu Red Cross in its response to the disaster.
