Photo Tuesday: Stepping in and saving a life

Every Tuesday, we publish a photo to show Red Cross at work across the country or around the world. Do you have a photo to share? Let us know!

Check out this photo from a recent Red Cross Rescuer Award presentation in Toronto.

At the presentation, we recognized Derek Thompson, a Metrolinx employee, who used his first aid skills to save a passenger’s life. Derek, a GO Customer Service Ambassador, was working at Union Station when the passenger collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. Thinking fast on his feet, Derek grabbed a first aid kit containing an automated external defibrillator (AED) and started CPR. Within seconds, the passenger started to breathe again.

November is CPR Month – a time to raise awareness about the importance of learning CPR. With over 70 per cent of cardiac arrests happening at home, learning CPR is a simple action that could help save a loved one’s – or in Derek’s case a stranger’s – life.
