Red Cross societies around the world are getting ready to mark World First Aid Day on Saturday Sept. 11, first introduced by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in 2000.
It’s a great opportunity for us to blog about first aid, so stay tuned!
We also want to hear your stories on how first aid has helped you or your family. You can email us at Karen.Snider@redcross.ca or Jennifer.Mayville@redcross.ca
It’s hard to believe that Red Cross first aid courses started in the 1930s.
And actually, you may not know this, but the international Red Cross movement began with first aid. Red Cross founder Henry Dunant provided aid to the injured on a battlefield in Italy in 1859; and so first aid in the Red Cross was born.
First aid courses are still at the core of what the Red Cross does in Canada and abroad. In fact, every year the Red Cross trains more than 472,000 Canadians on first aid and CPR. Last year, in Ontario alone, we trained more than 7,000 people.
