First aid instructor profile – Deb Demaine teaches first aid in Niagara and Halton Regions

Deb Demaine is a first aid instructor in Niagara and Halton.

Three years ago, Deb Demaine was in the midst of a career change. She started teaching first aid as a part-time job, not knowing it would change her life.

Nowadays, Deb can be found teaching first aid full-time in Niagara and Halton regions.  Her courses include teaching employees at companies, the general public, and also a marine safety first aid course

“I like all the different people,” she says. “It’s not the same every day.”

She has heard stories of her students putting their life-saving skills to good use. One time, a student called her the day after a course to say he successfully performed an abdominal thrust on someone who was choking.

As an avid camper, hiker and boxer, she has used first aid skills herself to clean up some bumps and scrapes, and to treat the odd occasion of frost bite or heat exhaustion. She believes anyone can do it.

“It’s something simple that people can learn,” she says.
