Bring preparedness on your next outdoor trip

Fresh air, beautiful scenery, being one with nature ... These are just a few of the reasons why many people head into the wilderness to do some hiking or camping, especially this time of year.

Unfortunately, the last few weeks we have read stories of hikers getting injured or even going missing while out on the trails.  One hiker injured his head after falling three meters down a cliff at Waterton Lakes National Park in Southern AB. He was fortunately found and airlifted out of the park.

Another hiker in Squamish B.C went missing after heading out into the woods without a sleeping bag, tent or compass.

Stories like these are a reminder of how important it is to be prepared. For all outdoor trips, the Red Cross recommends a kit with 10 essential items for survival:

  • A fire starter
  • A signalling device
  • A knife
  • Navigation aids (make sure you know how to use them)
  • Whistle
  • Sun protection
  • First aid kit
  • Emergency food and water
  • Emergency clothing
  • Light
  • Shelter

The Red Cross also offers a Wilderness First Aid course.
