Canadian Red Cross Secretary General and CEO condemns attack on ICRC Afghanistan office in Jalalabad

May 30, 2013 - “The Canadian Red Cross extends its condolences to the Afghan guard’s family and echoes the sentiments of our colleagues at the ICRC in condemning this attack on the Jalalabad office. Flags on Canadian Red Cross buildings across the country are being lowered for three days, as an expression of our support.

Today, Conrad Sauvé, Secretary General and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross, issued the following statement:

"Yesterday, we learned that an attack had been perpetrated on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) office in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad. Sadly, Afghan staff member Abdul Bashir Khan, the father of eight children, was killed in the attack."

Red Cross urges Canadians to know the risks

This week is Emergency Preparedness week, an annual awareness campaign to encourage Canadians to be better prepared to deal with disasters and emergencies.

Canadian Red Cross surgical team responds to critical care needs in South Sudan

During the award ceremony for the Hommage bénévolat-Québec, held last Tuesday at the Vieille-Capitale, Ms. Pauline Marois, Premier of Quebec, and Ms. Agnès Maltais, Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity, responsible for community action and volunteer action, acknowledged the commitment and dedication of Mishell Potvin from Jonquière and Joël Filion from Lévis, both Red Cross volunteers. The Hommage bénévolat-Québec award is issued to underscore the outstanding commitment and valuable contribution of volunteers from all Quebec regions. Its purpose is to reward the efforts of citizens in their communities in order to foster and develop volunteerism.

Red Cross responds to earthquake in Lushan, China

The Red Cross is rapidly mobilizing to meet the needs of thousands of people affected by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Lushan, China. According to initial assessments more than 2,000 people are injured and over 120,000 people have been forced from their homes.
