Tiffany Circle Discovering Solferino side trip
Scheduled for October 6-9, 2024, an optional post-conference add-on trip to the small town of Solferino, located in norther Italy. Solferino is rich with the history of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement and its founding. In 1859, the Swiss businessman Henry Dunant arrived on the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino, Italy. Dunant witnessed firsthand the suffering of war – on both sides of the conflict. Over 30,000 were killed or wounded with hardly any access to medical care. The locals carried the wounded soldiers from the battlefield to the nearby villages where they were cared for by volunteers.
What Henry experienced on that day – and in the days and weeks that followed – convinced him that a corps of trained volunteers was needed to supplement military medicine and aide the wounded soldiers during armed conflicts. His idea took root and inspired the founding of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
The itinerary includes:
- 6th October – Private transfer from Geneva to hotel in Mantua, Italy
- 7th October – Walking tour of Verona, Italy with private transfer and guides
- 8th October – Retracing the steps of Henry Dunant that led to the birth of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement, with guided tours of major sites in Castiglione Delle Stivere and Solferino
- 9th October – Private transfer from hotel in Mantua, Italy to either Milan Malpensa Airport or Geneva Airport
