In 2018, the food insecurity crisis that is impacting millions of people in parts of Africa is expected to continue. Learn what is happening, who is being affected, and what is being done to help. 

Recently the Red Cross and Red Crescent in Bangladesh received much needed hygiene kits, thanks to support from the Government of Canada. The kits were distributed to people in Hakimpara Camp, Bangladesh. 

In Haiti, Cliford Monfort has helped to respond to disasters including the 2010 earthquake, Hurricane Matthew in 2016, and most recently Hurricane Irma in 2017. 

One of the greatest risks for the people affected by drought in southern Ethiopia is the loss of their livestock; their livelihoods. 

As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention. In the humanitarian sector, particularly in emergencies, innovations often come about in response to a specific challenge that forces organizations like the Canadian Red Cross to adapt and change processes.

​Tropical Storm Tembin made landfall in Mindanao, in southern Philippines, last weekend, causing flashfloods and landslides and impacting up to 23 provinces and leaving thousands displaced. The storm caused damage to homes, as well as critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges and power lines. Casualties and injuries, as well as missing people, have also been reported.

When people think of hospitals, they think of doctors and nurses. They don’t always think of scientists in lab coats. But we are always there, hidden in the background, providing those doctors and nurses with critical patient information to guide their diagnosis and treatment decisions. Even in a field hospital in Bangladesh. 

Recently, I had the chance to chat with four women aid workers, who have been on a combined 35 missions for the Red Cross. They talked about why they do this kind of work, what keeps them driven, and what it is like being a woman in the field.
