Volunteer Spotlight: Snowbirds help Red Cross on both sides of the border

In 2009, Margo saw an article in a newsletter about their local Red Cross branch in Port Perry, Ontario, looking for volunteers. In under a month, both she and her husband, Ken, had signed up and were trained to respond to small disasters such as house fires in their region as volunteers in the Red Cross Disaster Management program. Since the couple is retired, they are able to deploy to most emergencies and disasters and were recently in Alberta to respond to the severe flooding.

Gadsden

Ken and Margo Gadsden are what most Canadians call "snowbirds." The retired couple enjoy their Port Perry home all summer and every fall they fly south to Florida to spend the winter in a warmer climate. But their annual trip south doesn't mean they have to take a break from their volunteer work - the Gadsdens are also volunteers for the American Red Cross!

The Canadian Red Cross thanks Ken and Margo for all of their great work on both sides of the border!
