Every day, we publish a photo to show Red Cross at work across the country or around the world. Do you have a photo to share? Let us know!
Aileen Nauss, a Canadian Red Cross ice safety expert, reminds us that lakes and ponds in many parts of Atlantic Canada are not yet safe for skating or other activities because of fluctuating temperatures. Here, she overlooks a lake in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia that has only a thin layer of ice covered by a bit of snow, which further weakens ice by acting like a blanket. The Canadian Red Cross has a handy 15-20-25 cm rule to help people determine the thickness required for any activity.
