Through our Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP), the Canadian Red Cross loans medical equipment such as crutches, canes, wheelchairs, and other items to help people recover at home from illnesses and other health issues. In 2020-21, Red Cross loaned more than 42,000 pieces of health equipment to about 22,000 Albertans.
Also, within HELP, Red Cross launched the Friendly Calls Program in Alberta. Specially trained volunteers connect by phone with HELP clients aged 55 and over who may be feeling isolated or lonely. The compassionate calls provide support, a sense of companionship, and links to resources in the community to participants to assist with their wellbeing.
